America's Most Iconic Sporting Event
For more than 150-years, the Kentucky Derby has served as the oldest consecutively held sporting event in North America, with a foundation deeply rooted in the ethos of diversity and inclusion!
Amid increased calls for social change across the global sporting landscape, the same is true of the iconic Derby brand (The Kentucky Derby returns to a Louisville contending with protest, pain, and its past). In the late 1800s, Black talent (jockeys & trainers) played a pivotal role in shaping what is now today a multi-billion dollar global equine industry. In the Kentucky Derby's inaugural race, 13 of the 15 jockeys were Black and African-American talent won 15 of the first 28 running’s of this world-renowned sporting event through 1902 when African Americans began to be systematically barred from horse racing by way of Jim Crow laws.
Currently, our Kentucky-based 501 (C3) non-profit, 'The Project to Preserve African American Turf History' (PPAATH), is firmly committed to expanding new inclusive partnerships in a combined effort to deliver more equitable programming across film, television (Isaac Murphy Image Awards showcase) and live sports that builds upon increased representation and unity throughout the Kentucky Derby season and beyond...
